COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS) AND YOU

What have you learned working with this community?

Teachers of computer science are so creative, innovative, and collaborative. I am continually impressed with the resources, strategies, and approaches that teachers share and are willing to receive feedback on from their peers. The CS education community has been growing rapidly, yet I love how close knit the whole community feels. It really drives home the point that "we are in this together" to ensure all students have access to the highest quality computer science opportunities.

What do you enjoy most about working on CS for All Teachers?

As a former high school science teacher, I love connecting with teachers of CS -- elementary, middle, and high school -- to hear what they are doing in their communities. Through our Community Ambassadors and Twitter account, I feel like I get to hear about the realities of what implementation of CS looks on the ground -- the good, the excellent, the bad, and the confusing. These experiences, stories, photos, and virtual conversations keep me grounded as I try to continue to work towards computer science for all.

Write a poem or haiku describing what working with this community and fellow CS for All Teachers staff is like.

Connect, Listen, and

Share. CS Teachers light the

way for all students.

TELL US MORE!

What is your first memory about CS?

In middle school, I was an online chat host (remember those?!) for a community on American Online (AOL!) that was focused on young people interested in technology. Through this chat hosting experience, I was given opportunities with AOL staff members to "program" some of their pages, using a proprietary scripting language called "RAINMAN". This experience helped me start to understand that CS was a tool that could be used to support the world in so many ways!

Outside of CS for All Teachers, what types of projects do you work on?

Most of my work is centered around computer science for all students and teachers through virtual communities, micro-credentials, and researcher practitioner partnerships.

What program or app can you absolutely not live without? What makes it so indispensable?

Spotify is essential for me. I work from home, so I love having music on in the background to focus me or help me quickly relax. My Spotify playlist of choice is "lofi hip hop music - beats to relax/study to" by ChilledCow (also found on YouTube here).

How do you unwind or recharge after a long day (week, month, etc.) of work? Any hobbies, special talents, or favorite vacation spots you'd like to share?

In the last six months, I have really ramped up going to bootcamp-style gym classes (like Barry's Bootcamp) to unwind and recharge while someone yells at me to get into shape with great music playing! Outside of that, I have become the household bartender and enjoy making hand-crafted cocktails!
