Happy International Women's Day!
As a middle school teacher at an all-girls school, I felt compelled to read this recent blog post found on Teach Computing. The title, "How can we support girls’ problem solving in computing?" immediately caught my attention as the process of making mistakes and working through the debugging process can be a huge source of frustration for my students.
The blog post referenced a recent paper in the journal Computer Science Education. The authors suggest that there is a dynamic relationship between emotion, problem solving and identity and argue that a better understanding of what learners feel and think can help teachers create more inclusive learning environments. Three key takeaways from this article included using reflective journals, removing ownership of failure, and specifically teaching problem-solving and emotion-regulation strategies.
